During the last four years I’ve been making Raku fired animals, and mixed-media sculptures based on my interest in Pre-Columbian american and African ritual-oriented art. I continue to develop a fictional lost civilization of ‘Ranalutra’ and the people of the ‘Dog Tooth Violet’. Besides clay, as mediums I use a variety of found natural and recycled industrial materials, including porcupine quills, shelf mushrooms, barkfeathers, sheet steel and copper, wood, ashes, nails, acrylic and oil paints. My work reflects my view of the strong connection between human beings, other animals and the natural world in general. I’m drawn to so-called ‘primitive’ societies, whose mythologies are based on this connection: amalgamated animal/human sculptures, as well as music and dance, are used in multiple ways to ward off evil sprits, welcome healing forces, bring on rain or sun. I’m working towards using the juxtaposition of these ancient ways of thinking and those of our modern world in my 2 and 3 dimensional pieces, attempting to invent my own myths and metaphors.
